Canon PowerShot A520

The PowerShot A520 is an excellent choice for those seeking manual control. It features shutter and aperture control features, as well the ability to focus manually.

Although this camera doesn’t make indoor photography particularly easy, most of its outdoor shots are clean and sharp. A Photo Stitching feature is a nice bonus, allowing you to take outdoor photos with ease. Another good feature is the ability to record video at 640×480 pixels, though the 10 FPS recording speed will make your movies appear a bit choppy.

At a cost of only $299, this 4-megapixel is quite unique for its price range, and presents itself as an excellent option for the control-oriented outdoor photographer.

Canon ZR700

This camcorder features a pleasant and easy-to-manage design with a 2.7-inch display, 25X optical zoom, and an integrated joystick that makes it easy to modify settings.

The ZR700’s image quality, however, is far from perfect with videos appearing muddy in low light, with lots of unnecessary noise.

In all fairness, this device has some beneficial features including a built-in sliding lens cover, as well as the ability to smoothly alternate zoom settings for a cool cinematic effect.

This model might work for some casual, budget-conscious customers, but for the serious video-shooter the quality issues will probably be a deal breaker.

Although very pricey, this high-level photo snapper is sure to take thousands of excellent pictures in magnificent detail.

Canon PowerShot SD450 (Elph)

No bigger or heavier than a deck of, the PowerShot SD450’s super-compact and stylish design lives up to the “Digital Elph” name.

A generous 2.5-inch LCD display takes up most of the back panel, making the controls look cramped at first. In reality, however, the buttons are laid out in such a way that you won’t have any trouble after the first minute or two.

Ready to spring to life at a moment’s notice the Elph takes high quality 5-MP pictures with its 3X optical lens, and it’s video recording features are second-to-none in this size range.

You can use this device to capture 640×480 digital video clips, with sound, of up to 1GB in size. The 30 fps frame rate makes for almost camcorder-quality video from this surprisingly powerful little creature.

The 2-inch LCD display may seem a bit small to some users, but you can always depend on the trusty optical viewfinder.
