Canon PowerShot SD450 (Elph)

No bigger or heavier than a deck of, the PowerShot SD450’s super-compact and stylish design lives up to the “Digital Elph” name.

A generous 2.5-inch LCD display takes up most of the back panel, making the controls look cramped at first. In reality, however, the buttons are laid out in such a way that you won’t have any trouble after the first minute or two.

Ready to spring to life at a moment’s notice the Elph takes high quality 5-MP pictures with its 3X optical lens, and it’s video recording features are second-to-none in this size range.

You can use this device to capture 640×480 digital video clips, with sound, of up to 1GB in size. The 30 fps frame rate makes for almost camcorder-quality video from this surprisingly powerful little creature.

Kodak EasyShare V570

As the first ever dual-lens digital camera to hit the market, the EasyShare V570 offers some great improvements over the V550 model.

This 5-megapixel device takes the V550’s cool design and 2.5-inch LCD display, and packs in two high quality lenses, adding a lot of versatility to an already great thing. A 23mm wide angle lens and more standard 39mm to 117mm optical zoom are both packed into this sleek little device.

One way to make use of the wide-angle lens is with the panorama switching function, which takes three pictures, then combines them into a single elongated image.

Other features that you’ll probably appreciate include automatic red-eye reduction, picture blur alert, and cropping, as well as 21 distinct scene modes to set the stage for the kind of picture you want. 32MB of internal memory lets you squeeze your first few photos onto the camera itself, while an SD expansion slot allows for plenty of additional storage.

The 2-inch LCD display may seem a bit small to some users, but you can always depend on the trusty optical viewfinder.

In terms of video, the SD400 is one of the best, with the ability to record at an impressive 60 fps for one minute at a time, or 30 fps for as long as your memory card lets it.

Convenient features like in-camera red-eye reduction and face priority auto-focus makes this a great choice for documenting that family party or get-together with friends.

Blurry action shots and mediocre battery life might not make this the best camera for long-distance travelers, but as far as general use goes, it’s definitely a strong contender.

Fujifilm FinePix Z1

The FinePix Z1 features a handsome metal body and 3X zoom lens. Folded optics keeps the lens from protruding, allowing for a compact and highly manageable overall design.

The lack of an optical viewfinder is one small disadvantage, but a surprisingly large 2.5-inch LCD display helps you set up the perfect shot before you snap the shutter.

Controls on the Z1 are easy-to-use, and not too intimidating for the inexperienced photographer, but they might not satisfy those seeking a high level of manual control.

Although this camera’s flash is a little weak, it can still be a good choice for low and ambient light photography, thanks to its ability to take pictures at ISO 800.
